CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Lyon sat on a couch in his sitting room, opposite his parents, who beamed with pride.

He still wasn’t used to his sitting room, let alone the full suite of rooms now at his disposal. Lauren and Byron had voiced their approval multiple times since his return, but they still looked more honoured with the change than Lyon himself. It was hard to tell whether they were prouder of Lyon for fulfilling Lith’s order or the ball the emperor would hold in Lyon’s honour.

Lyon’s return to Solare had been far grander than he had expected. Barely a day had passed before Lith announced his appointment as Moon to the Empire. The position and the details of its responsibilities meant little to the people—and to Lyon, truth be told—but it marked him as something special to both commoner and noble alike. Which meant that every noble at court had swarmed him with attention, even those who politely avoided him before.

Solalyn had warned him about courtiers seeking favour and nobles who would attempt to convince him of their political views. But what he hadn’t expected was the abundance of attention from eligible women that had suddenly found reasons to appear in front of him. Luckily, only a handful had done more than speak to him and he had avoided the few that had tried to seduce him in public.

All the attention overwhelmed Lyon, but what was worse was how Solalyn teased him about it. She had been relentless with mocking him whenever she saw any sign of his discomfort. Lyon shook his head at the thought. Next time she makes a fool of herself, I swear…

The Mark that had first appeared on Solalyn had manifested on Sulaine and the other surviving members of Solalyn’s guard shortly after their return. Lyon did not know why it appeared on them, as he hadn’t actively done whatever he had done when Solalyn had first received hers, but the Mark appeared regardless. They referred to the Mark as the Moon Mark—a name Lyon had fought and failed to change. Strangely, the Mark always appeared over the bearer’s heart.

Experimentation revealed the strength of the Mark varied by bearer.

None, not even Solalyn, who seemed the strongest, could slow down the world. Other limitations existed, too. The guards could only Illuminate in his presence. When they did, Lyon felt an odd tugging on his mind—it was a strange sensation, but it wasn’t painful. Sulaine and Solalyn Illuminated further away—the latter had done so on the other side of the city and they had yet to find the princess’ limit.

“Lyon.” Lauren cleared her throat and shot Lyon a pointed look. His mother glanced at the clock.

“Oh, sorry!” Lyon stood up and rushed to his bedroom. He had a ball to attend.

***

Lyon took a deep breath and let it out slowly as he waited for his arrival to be announced.

He stood outside of the great hall and nervously looked over his clothes again. He wore a fine suit, the quality of which was something that rivalled what the royal family would wear.
